The SPPDI Model 1.3 is an instrumentati
on-grade laser optical interferometer. The SPPDI Model 1.3 is a reliable, highly portable tool for obtaining precision interferometric measurements of optical equipment ranging from single components to entire optical systems.
Optics manufacturers will appreciate the SPPDI Model 1.3’s compact machined aluminum housing that provides a structurally rigid platform for high-precision interferometric analyses. Its modular design, including instrument ports for alternate laser sources, alignment cameras, and recording devices support a wide range of analytical configurations. (Please note: Previous 3D-printed PLA versions of the SPPDI have been discontinued.)
For educators and academic labs, the SPPDI Model 1.3 is an excellent platform for demonstrating the principles of interferometry, laser measurement, and optical alignment. The rugged, black anodized CNC-machined aluminum housing ensures durability for classroom and laboratory use, while the 2” telescope attachment and instrument ports provide for a flexible demonstration and testing platform for various optical components and systems.
Amateur telescope makers can utilize the SPPDI Model 1.3 for testing mirrors in the polishing stage, as well as in-situ optical testing of entire telescopes. The included 2” telescope attachment and advanced interferometric features allow for professional-grade testing in the shop or in the field.
Key Features of the SPPDI Model 1.3 Interferometer
- Patented common-path optical design: Enables quick live-view assessment of the optical quality of optics ranging from small components with short focal lengths to entire optical systems. Precision flat internal optics, used at normal or near-normal incidence, do not contribute significant astigmatism or spherical aberration to measurements. Internal signal and reference beam paths are easily blocked to facilitate initial system alignment or geometric phase-shifting interferometry.
- Interchangeable laser source: Built-in low-cost diode laser source is easily replaceable, or may be replaced with other types of laser sources.
- Integrated NTSC-AV2 video alignment camera: Simplifies setup and alignment, perfect for classroom demonstrations or professional optical testing.
- Battery-powered laser collimator: Enables easy and portable test beam alignment.
- Protective, foam-padded carrying case: Great for long-term storage or transportation.

Foam padded carrying case
Not included: User provides the video cable (terminated with female BNC connector) and 5V USB power supply. High-precision concave spherical reference mirrors and additional optical components and adapters are available (sold separately). For maximum fringe contrast and best interferometric results, we recommend an adjustable linear polarizing filter (such as the Hoya “PL” type), readily available for most camera lenses.
