SPPDI® Model 1.3

SPPDI® Model 1.3 — US$2495.00

Our newly introduced SPPDI Model 1.3 is comprised of a black anodized CNC machined aluminum enclosure, with a 3D printed laser attachment and a 3D printed video alignment camera attachment. (These two 3D printed attachments do not contribute to the structural strength of the SPPDI.) Note that the previously offered 3D printed PLA versions of the SPPDI are no longer offered.

The SPPDI is able to directly measure spherical or aspherical test beams as “fast” as f/4, with no intervening optics between the SPPDI and the test article. This means, for example, that the SPPDI can directly measure f/2 concave spherical or aspherical mirrors at their f/4 centers of curvature.  Converging spherical test beams faster than f/4 can also be measured with the use of a Collimating Lens Attachment, a microscope objective with a suitable numerical aperture, and a high precision concave spherical reference mirror. As previously mentioned, measurement of uncorrected aspherical converging test beams faster than f/4 should not be attempted due to retrace errors in the focal ratio conversion optics (e.g., microscope objective).

The new Model 1.3 is provided with two slits in the enclosure cover, which permit the insertion of a 3″ long x 1/2″ wide x 1 mm thick black plastic light absorber in the signal beam arm and/or the reference beam arm of the SPPDI. Insertion of the light absorber enables blocking the signal beam or reference beam without disturbing the rotational orientation and tilt of the internal polarizer tilt plates when making sensitive measurements, or when performing geometrical phase shifting.

SPPDI units are assembled and tested at our manufacturing facility as orders are received. We do occasionally have a small inventory of this product available for immediate shipment. An SPPDI Model 1.3 includes:

  • Pre-assembled built-in laser source
  • 5-volt USB-A power cable for laser
  • Pre-assembled built-in NTSC-AV2 video alignment camera with USB-A power and male BNC video signal pigtails
  • 5-volt USB-A power cable for video alignment camera
  • Battery-powered laser collimator (Li-ion battery not included)
  • Foam padded carrying case
  • Free shipping by ground transportation within the continental US

Note: User must supply a video signal cable for connection of the video alignment camera to a user-supplied video display device. Also note that high precision reference mirrors and focal ratio conversion optics (collimating lens attachment and microscope objectives) are not included, but may be purchased separately.

Attention: For best performance, we recommend the use of an adjustable (rotatable) linear polarizing filter, to be mounted to the user’s camera lens. This will increase the interference fringe contrast. We highly recommend Hoya brand linear polarizing camera filters (type “PL”), which are available in a variety of sizes to fit different camera lenses. These are commonly available in camera stores or online.

Please note that the Viewing Telescope Attachment is no longer included. The functionality of this attachment was found to be redundant, in light of the functionality provided by a digital camera with live view capability.

The SPPDI Model 1.3 is a Class 1 laser product, and is inherently safe to use. However, if you are unfamiliar with the use of lasers, you are advised to read the Laser Safety section of this website.
